10/30/2018

IN CLASS
  • We practiced fast shutter speeds using Shutter Priority (S or TV)

CONSIDERATIONS
  • Remember, the faster your shutter, the sharper the motion, but....
  • the less light you get in (because the 'eyelid' is open less)

HOMEWORK
  • Watch the video above
  • Practice getting fast shutter speed (ideally falling snow)

10.24 - Filling the Frame & 'Cheap' Cameras

10/25/2018

IN CLASS
  • We practiced Filling the Frame
    • Remember, this means that ONE subject completely fills the entire frame.
    • It is a form of simplification
  • We also discussed the abilities of your 'cheap' cameras

HOMEWORK
  • Practice Filling the Frame
    • Post your best example to the Class Photoshare in Homeroom
  • Complete on staged series of photographs around ONE subject, using objects around it like Peter McKinnon does to draw attention to it.
    • This is a form of Still Life photography.
    • It may take some time. Pay attention to light, textures, focus, etc.
    • Take as many photos as you need and upload your best one to the Class Photoshare in Homeroom.
    • Good Luck!

10.22 - Aperture & Simplification

10/22/2018

IN CLASS
  • We practiced more simplification, making sure we have only ONE subject and that all extraneous information is removed so that our viewer's eyes are only drawn to the subject.
  • We discussed the role of aperture in blurring out backgrounds to help with simplification and making sure our subject is the only thing in focus.

CONSIDERATIONS
  • Remember, using a shallow depth of field will help with having blurred out backgrounds.
  • This is a form of simplification in photography.

HOMEWORK
  • Shoot photos practicing using low aperture f-stops (lower the number, more open the aperture, more blurred your photos). Make sure you are still working with a single simple subject.
  • More advanced users...
    • Try using shallow depth of field with different tools to have a modified foreground and background. Think using one of the camera hacks that McKinnon uses below... Or just use great foreground and background to isolate your subject like crazy!

10.21 - Simplification

Sorry for the lateness all...

IN CLASS
  • We continued our work with lines and watched Matti's discussion on lines in composition.
  • We practiced his techniques to try to see how we can use lines in different ways when shooting with subjects.

CONSIDERATIONS
  • Consider how you use lines to draw the viewer's eye, no matter how you are doing it, be aware.

HOMEWORK
  • We are moving on to Simplification in our photos. Study/look up the idea of 'simplification'. To make things simple, the idea of simplification I want you to be working with this week is when you make sure that only the main subject is what your eye is drawn toward.
  • Try taking extremely simple photos and put your shots up to the Homeroom Class Share. We will discuss this more on Monday.

  • We had Mrs. Chastain discuss the importance of lines, weight, and value in some of the work of the Masters of Photography.

CONSIDERATIONS
  • Think of the importance of how lines move our eyes through an image.
  • Consider the importance of negative space and shadows as strong line definition.
  • Consider how some things ca interrupt lines to give some more depth to a shot.

HOMEWORK
  • Find an image online that you like that uses lines well.
  • Try to copy an aspect of that image.
  • Make your image black and white
  • Post your image to the photo share for us to discuss on Wednesday

  • You can also look for more examples of leading lines in photography
  • Practice taking photos and using what you learned in the Leading Lines article

The Rule of Odds - As Odd As I Could Get by Paul Howard on 500px.com

IN CLASS
  • We revisited the Rule of Thirds
  • We signed in to Homeroom
  • We practiced workflow
    • Camera to Computer to Internet (sharing)
  • We practiced the Rule of Odds
CONSIDERATIONS
  • The Rule of Odds is more about using things to keep your eye focused on the most important things in a shot. Odd numbers help drive your viewers' eye to the subject and not get lost in duplicates or middle spaces.
  • Feel free to look up more examples!

HOMEWORK
  • Practice the Rule of Odds along with the Rule of Thirds. Try both and try to combine then where/when you can.
  • Bring your best Rule of Odds pics to class, and feel free to post your practice work during the week to Homeroom.
